What makes a page load fast

Visitors, especially on phones, leave pages that take too long. Speed starts with your server and how your page is built. These are the factors the speed test looks at.

Server

Fast server response

We measure how long your server takes to answer. A slow first answer delays everything else on the page.

Weight

A light page

The HTML itself should stay small. Huge pages take longer to download and to process on phones.

Gzip

Compression on

Gzip or Brotli compression makes text files several times smaller on the way to the visitor.

Scripts

No blocking scripts

Scripts and styles in the page head that block rendering delay the first view. Defer or load them later when you can.

3rd party

Fewer outside scripts

Every chat widget, tracker or embed adds requests to other servers. Keep only the ones you need.

Images

Well-behaved images

Width and height on images stop the page from jumping as it loads, and lazy loading waits for images below the fold.

How the score works

Each check passes, warns or fails, and is weighted by impact. Critical Law 25 failures cap the Law 25 score at 49.
